The Whole Story: What Jesus Really Meant By You Must Be Born Again
For many Christians, the question seems simple. For others, it is confusing—or even unsettling. Is being born again a single emotional moment, a personal decision, or a lifelong transformation? Does it begin with a prayer, a feeling, or something deeper?
When Jesus first spoke those words to Nicodemus, He did not leave their meaning vague. “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” In Born Again: The Whole Story, Bill Moran returns to that original moment and traces how one of Christianity’s most familiar phrases drifted from Christ’s own explanation. Drawing from Scripture, the early Church, the Reformation, revivalist movements, and modern evangelical culture, Moran shows how the new birth—once understood as a sacramental mystery of water and Spirit—gradually became a slogan, an identity badge, and for some, an entire religious system.
This book does not dismiss conversion, emotion, or personal faith. Instead, it places them where Christianity always did: within a larger story of grace initiated by God, beginning in baptism, unfolding through discipleship, and maturing through perseverance in Christ.
Written with pastoral clarity and historical care, Born Again: The Whole Story invites readers—Catholic, Protestant, and searching alike—to move beyond slogans and rediscover what Jesus actually meant when He spoke of new birth.
Because being born again was never meant to be a moment you remember.
It was meant to be a life you live.

William (Bill) Moran is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who provides professional counseling services in Calabasas, CA, serving individuals, couples, and families from diverse backgrounds. Bill grew up in culturally diverse Queens, New York, in a devout Irish/Italian Catholic family. Like many young adults, he stepped away from his faith during his teenage years and lived a secular life into his late twenties before beginning a deeper search for meaning and purpose.
Bill began his professional journey as an electrical contractor at age 19, working in the field for 10 years. With a natural passion for working with people, he later transitioned into real estate, obtaining his license in 1984. He built a successful 30-year career in real estate sales and mortgage banking, employing hundreds of people and helping countless families and individuals achieve their financial goals. Despite this success, Bill felt something was missing and began exploring psychology, theology, and spirituality more deeply.
Driven by a lifelong commitment to self-improvement and helping others, Bill earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Psychology with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy. During his internship, he worked as a co-therapist in domestic violence group counseling programs and established a support group for survivors of domestic abuse.
Following graduation, Bill served as a primary therapist at well-respected recovery and intensive outpatient programs in Malibu and Woodland Hills. Drawing from both professional training and personal life experience, he offers compassionate, grounded counseling services in Calabasas, CA that support individuals and families in navigating life’s challenges, strengthening relationships, and developing healthier emotional patterns.
